A fast-moving wildfire near Greece’s Thessaloniki sparks evacuations as smoke blankets suburbs

A fast-moving wildfire erupted near Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, prompting evacuations in three nearby suburbs. The fire began in a mountainous ravine and quickly spread, damaging several businesses but sparing homes. Residents of Anthoupoli, Filothei, and Galini were evacuated, along with a facility for people with special needs. A 76-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of starting the fire. The blaze created a heavy smoke cloud over parts of Thessaloniki, and explosions were heard as flammable materials ignited. Over 115 firefighters and 38 fire engines, along with volunteers, battled the fire, but strong winds made containment difficult. Although the fire hasn’t reached the city, firefighters remain vigilant. Greece, accustomed to wildfires due to its hot, dry summers, faced its first major fire of the season earlier in the week. Additional fires were reported in nearby areas, including the Halkidiki Peninsula and Kilkis. QUESTION: How might the increasing frequency of wildfires impact the way communities in Greece prepare for and respond to such emergencies?
