Morocco beats World Cup co-host Canada 3-0 and advances to the quarterfinals

Morocco made history by defeating Canada 3-0 in the World Cup round of 16, becoming the first African nation to reach the quarterfinals more than once. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice, with his first goal coming from a free kick by Achraf Hakimi in the 50th minute and his second from a pass by Brahim Díaz in the 82nd minute. Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal in stoppage time. Morocco, ranked sixth by FIFA, will face the winner of the Paraguay-France match. Canada’s historic run ended despite efforts from Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan, with Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou making crucial saves. The match was a rematch from the previous World Cup, where Morocco also triumphed over Canada. The game was marked by physical play, resulting in eight yellow cards. QUESTION: How might Morocco’s success in the World Cup inspire young athletes in Africa and around the world?
