Dayslong preliminary hearing for Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer is underway

A former campus police officer, Christopher Bagley, testified about discovering a “sniper pad” on a rooftop near the site where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated. This testimony was part of a preliminary hearing to determine if Tyler Robinson, a 23-year-old Utah man, should stand trial for Kirk’s murder. Robinson is accused of shooting Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University and allegedly confessed in a note to his roommate. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, while Robinson’s defense has not commented on his guilt but is trying to remove the death penalty option. The hearing, attended by Kirk’s family and Donald Trump Jr., is the most significant presentation of evidence so far. Bagley described finding a screwdriver on the rooftop, which had a clear view of Kirk’s location during the shooting, adding to the evidence against Robinson. QUESTION: How might the outcome of this trial influence public perceptions of safety at university events?
