Death toll in Sri Lanka’s prison clash rises to 26, with another 77 in hospital

A violent clash at a prison in Negombo, Sri Lanka, has resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including seven prison officials and 19 inmates. The unrest began on Sunday between inmates and escalated on Monday when inmates attacked guards. The government is conducting three separate investigations to determine the cause of the violence and prevent future incidents. The Justice Minister described the event as tragic, with 77 others still hospitalized. The conflict reportedly started between rival gangs involved in the illegal drug trade. Security has been increased around the prison, which is severely overcrowded, housing over 39,000 inmates in a facility meant for 10,000. Families of those involved are anxiously seeking information about their loved ones. QUESTION: How might overcrowding in prisons contribute to violence, and what solutions could be implemented to address this issue?
