Target joins a rank of companies using a points system to track employee attendance

In recent years, large companies have adopted attendance-tracking systems to monitor employee punctuality and presence. Starting in September, Target will implement a points-based system to track unexcused absences and lateness among store and warehouse employees. Points are assigned for infractions such as being late or missing shifts without approval, with consequences ranging from manager check-ins to termination at 12 points. This initiative aligns with CEO Michael Fiddelke’s strategy to revitalize Target’s performance and customer experience amid declining sales. Similarly, Walmart has a five-point attendance policy, while other companies like PwC and Amazon have used technology to enforce return-to-office policies. However, some companies have reconsidered these measures following employee feedback. QUESTION: How might the implementation of strict attendance-tracking systems impact employee morale and productivity in the long term?
