The science of foresight: how to future-proof your research

Scientists often make assumptions about the future when planning research, but they rarely test these assumptions. This can lead to a mismatch between current research and future needs, especially as technology and global conditions change rapidly. During the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers had to quickly adapt to new challenges, highlighting the need for better foresight. The rise of artificial intelligence presents similar challenges. This approach, called translational foresight, would make research goals clearer and more adaptable, similar to how translational medicine connects lab discoveries to patient care.
