An Extreme Solar Storm May Be Even More Devastating Than Previously Imagined

A solar storm, like the rare Carrington Event of 1859, can disrupt electrical grids, navigation, and satellite communications. Recent research suggests that the impact of such storms today could be more severe than previously thought. Solar storms occur when charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s magnetosphere. During the Carrington Event, telegraph systems failed, and the northern lights were visible far from the poles. Today, strong storms could cause satellites to fall or disrupt GPS. Researchers use satellite data to estimate solar wind intensity, but this data may not accurately reflect conditions when the solar wind reaches Earth. This discrepancy can lead to underestimating the magnetosphere’s response to intense solar winds. Scientists have long believed there’s a limit to Earth’s response to extreme solar storms, but this study challenges that notion, suggesting the potential for greater impact.
