Want to save on student loan payments? Here’s how to get a discount.

Federal student loan borrowers have the opportunity to reduce their monthly payments by enrolling in the U.S. Department of Education’s automatic payment feature before September 30. This initiative offers a 1% interest rate discount, an increase from the usual 0.25%, and aims to encourage more borrowers to use autopay, which automatically deducts payments from their bank accounts. Currently, only 40% of borrowers use this feature, but the Education Department hopes to increase this to 80%, the pre-pandemic level. Eligible borrowers include those with government loans issued after July 1, 2012, and those already enrolled or who sign up for autopay before the deadline. The discount will last until June 30, 2028, potentially lowering interest rates from, for example, 6.39% to 5.39%. While this can help avoid late fees, borrowers should be cautious of overdraft fees if their account balance is insufficient. The financial benefits may be modest, with a 1% interest reduction saving only about $2 per month on a $5,000 loan over ten years. QUESTION: How might the increased use of automatic payments impact the financial habits of future generations of students?
