Labor Day, originating in the late 19th century, was established to honor workers, with the first celebration in New York City on September 5, 1882. It became a legal holiday in 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. On Labor Day, government offices, schools, banks, and the stock market are closed, while most retailers remain open, often with sales. Despite rising travel costs due to higher fuel prices, many Americans travel during this last summer weekend. AAA advises travelers to prepare their vehicles and pack emergency kits.
