What’s open and closed on Labor Day 2026? See which businesses are operating.

Labor Day, celebrated on September 7, is a federal holiday honoring American workers, offering many a day off and a chance to enjoy the last days of summer. Most major retail stores and grocery chains will remain open, allowing for last-minute shopping. Walmart, Target, and CVS will operate, though CVS may have reduced hours. Grocery stores like Aldi, Food Lion, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, and Wegmans will also be open, with some variations in hours. Retailers such as Dollar General, Home Depot, and Macy’s, among others, will welcome customers, as will fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks. However, the stock market will be closed, and there will be no mail delivery, as post offices and major banks observe the holiday. QUESTION: How might the availability of stores and services on Labor Day impact the way people celebrate and perceive the holiday?
