Earth’s hottest month ever recorded was this past August. These two factors are to blame

In August, Earth experienced its hottest month on record, surpassing a critical climate threshold due to human-induced climate change and an intensified El Nino, as reported by the European climate service Copernicus. The global average temperature reached 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit (16.96 degrees Celsius), slightly higher than the previous record set in July 2023, though within the uncertainty margin, making it a technical tie. This heat contributed to the hottest Northern Hemisphere summer ever recorded. August’s temperatures were 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, exceeding the 1.5-degree threshold of the 2015 Paris climate agreement. The eight hottest months have all occurred since July 2023. The extreme heat is now affecting daily life, with infrastructure challenges like melting roads and overwhelmed hospitals. Global ocean temperatures also hit record highs, with August 22 marking the hottest day for the world’s seas.
