Little Mercury may be shrinking faster than scientists expected

A recent study reveals that Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system, is shrinking faster than scientists previously thought. Researchers from the German Aerospace Center found that Mercury’s diameter may have decreased by up to 14 miles, which is 30% more than earlier estimates. This shrinkage is due to the planet’s hot iron core cooling and contracting over billions of years. The rough surface of Mercury, shaped by impacts from space debris, may have hidden the true extent of this shrinkage. The BepiColombo mission, a collaboration between European and Japanese space agencies, is set to study Mercury further and confirm these findings. This research could help scientists understand more about other planets that are also contracting.
