Actor Tatyana Ali is advocating for Black and Indigenous maternal health

Actor and singer Tatyana Ali is advocating for better maternity health outcomes for Black and Indigenous mothers by raising funds and awareness through her Baby Yams quilt initiative. Her activism stems from her own traumatic experience during the birth of her first son, Aszi, in 2016, where she faced what she describes as “obstetric violence.” Despite a normal pregnancy, Ali’s birth plan was ignored, and she was subjected to a high-risk emergency procedure, leading to an emergency c-section. This experience has fueled her commitment to reproductive justice. Ali, known for her role as Ashley Banks on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” continues her Hollywood career and will compete on “Dancing with the Stars.” She and her husband, Vaughn Rasberry, are raising two sons, Alejandro and Aszi, while Ali uses her platform to support Black and Indigenous birth workers. QUESTION: How might Tatyana Ali’s advocacy for reproductive justice inspire changes in maternity care for future generations?
