Google hit with $463 million fine for EU location data rule breach

Google has been fined 403 million euros by the European Union for mishandling users’ location data, violating strict privacy rules. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission found that Google did not process location data lawfully or fairly in its Web & App Activity and Location History settings. The investigation, which began six years ago, focused on Google’s compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation from 2018 to 2020. Google claims it has since updated its policies and improved tools for managing location data. Location data can be beneficial but also reveals private information about individuals. This fine is the fourth largest issued by the Irish watchdog, which has also fined TikTok and Meta. The regulator is still investigating three other privacy cases involving Google.
