PhD training should encourage ethical dissent

A PhD student struggling with the ethical dilemma of euthanizing mice for research sought advice on coping mechanisms. Suggestions included self-care practices like getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, and memorializing the animals. While these strategies may support the student’s mental health, they risk framing the ethical issue as merely a personal resilience challenge rather than addressing the moral conflict involved. This highlights the need for a deeper conversation about ethics in research and the emotional impact on those involved in animal testing. QUESTION: How might addressing ethical concerns in scientific research change the way future scientists approach their work?
