U.S. workers spend nearly $7,000 per year just to show up at the office

A recent study by Resume.io reveals that American workers spend an average of $6,736 annually just to commute to their offices. This expense, often referred to as the ‘RTO Tax,’ includes costs such as transportation, meals, and work attire. Interestingly, the study found that this tax is lowest in some of the country’s most expensive cities, like New York, Boston, and San Francisco, when adjusted for salary. This suggests that while living costs in these cities are high, the relative burden of commuting expenses is less significant compared to other areas. The findings highlight the financial impact of returning to the office and raise questions about the economic implications for workers across different regions. QUESTION: How might the financial burden of commuting influence future decisions about remote work and office attendance for your generation?
