FBI hunting the hackers who stole its employees’ sensitive data

The FBI is investigating a major cyberattack by a group called ShinyHunters, which claims to have stolen sensitive data from the FBI’s employment website. Brett Leatherman, the assistant director of the FBI’s cyber division, has publicly vowed to track down the hackers. The breach may have exposed several terabytes of data, including job applications and personal information of current and former FBI employees. Some employees are frustrated with the FBI’s communication about the breach and are concerned about their safety. The FBI is working to understand how the hackers accessed the data and is in contact with those affected. This incident is being compared to a significant 2015 data breach of government information. QUESTION: How might the exposure of sensitive information impact the lives of those whose data was stolen, and what steps should be taken to protect them?
