Tuberculosis treatment has advanced — now we need to stop drug resistance dragging us backwards

In 2022, the World Health Organization introduced a new, more effective six-month antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis (TB) that includes the drug bedaquiline, replacing the older, longer regimen that had severe side effects. However, this advancement is threatened by the emergence of drug-resistant TB strains. Researchers are still trying to understand how resistance develops, which is crucial as TB remains a leading infectious killer, causing over a million deaths annually. To combat this, research must focus not only on developing new drugs but also on understanding and preserving existing treatments. This includes using tools like genome sequencing to track resistance patterns and making these technologies accessible in high-burden countries. Without comprehensive data and research, it is challenging to manage and prevent drug-resistant TB effectively. QUESTION: How might the rise of drug-resistant TB impact global health efforts, and what role can young people play in addressing this challenge?
