Trump administration reverses stance on integration of people with disabilities

In 2025, disability advocates in New York protested against Medicaid cuts and demanded enforcement of disability rights. This followed a federal judge’s decision to remove “integration” from regulations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which previously required services for people with disabilities to be provided in the most integrated setting. The decision came after the Justice Department chose not to defend these rules in a lawsuit by several states. This shift has raised concerns among disability rights advocates, who fear it undermines the rights of disabled individuals to live freely and integrated into society. While the Americans with Disabilities Act and other legal precedents still support integration, the practical enforcement of these rights is uncertain. Advocates are now pushing for new legislation to secure these protections. QUESTION: How might changes in disability rights laws impact the daily lives of individuals with disabilities and their communities?
