Alleged Chinese agent makes federal court appearance

Wanying “Heather” Zhang, a 34-year-old realtor from Orange County, California, appeared in a Los Angeles federal court after being arrested by the FBI at Los Angeles International Airport. Zhang is accused of acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government, allegedly surveilling the son of Taiwan’s president near Seattle in 2025. Despite selling her home for $6 million, Zhang was represented by a public defender, though she plans to hire private counsel. Her husband, Edric Ding, attended the hearing but did not comment. The Justice Department’s National Security Division and local U.S. Attorneys are handling the case, which involves accusations of Zhang and an accomplice photographing the home of Ting-Yu Lai, the Taiwanese president’s son. The case highlights ongoing tensions between the U.S., China, and Taiwan. QUESTION: How might international relations between countries influence individual lives and careers in unexpected ways?
