FBI arrests a woman accused of spying on Taiwan leader’s family for China

The FBI arrested Wanying Zhang, also known as Heather, at Los Angeles International Airport for allegedly spying on the family of Taiwan’s president for China. Zhang, 34, is accused of working as an unregistered agent for China, taking photos and videos of the president’s son and his family, and sending information to Chinese officials. She was apprehended while attempting to fly to China and is set to appear in federal court. Taiwan’s Presidential Office confirmed the targeting of President Lai Ching-te’s relatives, condemning the actions as transnational repression. The Chinese Embassy and Foreign Ministry have not commented. Taiwan and China have a tense relationship, with China viewing Taiwan as part of its territory, while President Lai asserts Taiwan’s independence and has increased defense spending. QUESTION: How might international tensions like those between Taiwan and China impact global peace and security in the future?
