Cornell taps Sally Yates to lead review of its response to sexual misconduct claims

Cornell University has enlisted former Deputy U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates to conduct an independent review of its handling of sexual misconduct claims, including a 2024 incident involving a former student at a fraternity house. This review will assess the university’s policies and practices in preventing and responding to sexual harassment and assault. Yates’ investigation will cover various aspects, such as how reports are managed, student support systems, disciplinary procedures, and the role of campus police. The findings will be reported to a special committee of the Board of Trustees, which plans to share the results with the Cornell community. This initiative comes amid scrutiny and protests over the university’s response to the alleged incident, where no criminal charges were filed. Yates, known for her tenure at the Justice Department and her dismissal by President Trump in 2017, is expected to bring her expertise to this comprehensive review. QUESTION: How might the findings of this review influence the way universities across the country handle sexual misconduct cases in the future?
