Experts and parents discuss consent amid Cornell investigation

In response to an investigation into an alleged gang rape at a Cornell University fraternity house in 2024, clinical psychologist Dr. Sheryl Ziegler and educator Jackson Katz appeared on “CBS Mornings” to guide parents on discussing consent with their children. They emphasized the importance of starting conversations about consent early and making them age-appropriate. Dr. Ziegler highlighted the need for parents to model respectful behavior and to create an environment where children feel comfortable asking questions. Katz stressed the role of education in preventing sexual violence, advocating for schools to incorporate discussions about consent and respect into their curricula. Both experts agreed that open communication between parents and children is crucial in fostering understanding and preventing incidents of sexual misconduct. This dialogue is particularly significant in light of recent events, underscoring the need for proactive education on consent and respect.
