Jim Bakker, who co-founded “The PTL Club” but fell into disgrace, dies at 86

Jim Bakker, a prominent figure in evangelical television, passed away at 86. Known for creating “The PTL Club” with his first wife, Tammy Faye, Bakker’s ministry once attracted millions of viewers and included the Heritage USA theme park. Despite their success, the Bakkers’ empire crumbled due to a sex scandal and financial misconduct. Born in Muskegon, Michigan, Bakker met Tammy Faye at North Central Bible College, and together they launched a traveling ministry. Their work caught the attention of televangelist Pat Robertson, leading to a children’s show on the Christian Broadcasting Network and later “The 700 Club.” In 1974, Bakker founded the PTL Satellite Network, with “The PTL Club” becoming a major hit. Despite his fall from grace, Bakker continued his ministry with his second wife, Lori, in Branson, Missouri, until his death. QUESTION: How might the rise and fall of Jim Bakker’s ministry influence the way future religious leaders approach their roles and responsibilities?
