US resident arrested in connection with deadly British Columbia school shooting

A 30-year-old man from the United States, James Cody Bryant, has been arrested for allegedly encouraging an 18-year-old, Jessie Van Rootselaar, to carry out a deadly school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Bryant, charged with conspiracy to murder in a foreign country, reportedly communicated with Van Rootselaar over several months, providing advice, money, and agreeing to livestream the attack. The February shooting resulted in the deaths of eight people, including six children, making it one of Canada’s deadliest mass shootings. Van Rootselaar, who had a history of mental health issues, died by suicide during the attack. Authorities claim Bryant had the opportunity to alert law enforcement but chose not to, and he faces a potential life sentence if convicted. The two met online three years prior and discussed various plans, including sending weapons across the border. Despite suggesting alternative targets and advising against the attack at times, Bryant ultimately assured Van Rootselaar he would not report him to the police. QUESTION: How might the role of online communication platforms in facilitating harmful actions impact future regulations and safety measures?
