Sheriff, ex-sheriff charged with obstructing justice tied to Kouri Richins case: Docs

Two Utah sheriffs, one current and one former, have been charged with obstruction of justice in the Kouri Richins murder case. Kouri Richins was convicted of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, by poisoning him with fentanyl. The case attracted national attention due to its high-profile nature. Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby faces charges of obstruction and making a false statement, while former Summit County Sheriff David Edmunds is charged with obstruction. Both are accused of actions intended to hinder the investigation, including involvement with an anonymous letter. They have pleaded not guilty. Kouri Richins, who wrote a children’s book on grieving after her husband’s death, is appealing her conviction and has been ordered to pay $55 million in damages. QUESTION: How might the involvement of law enforcement officials in a criminal case impact public trust in the justice system?
