Chrysler Building to get its crown restored after being sold

The iconic Chrysler Building in Manhattan is set for a significant renovation as part of a multi-million-dollar sale. Developer Tishman Speyer, having acquired the lease from Cooper Union, plans to invest $235 million in refurbishing the nearly century-old skyscraper. The renovation will focus on restoring the Art Deco crown and the building’s 77-story façade, as well as upgrading internal systems like elevators and air handling. The 61st floor, known for its eagle gargoyles, will be transformed into an upscale lounge. Most of the building, located near Grand Central Station, will be used for office space, addressing the area’s low office availability. The Cooper Union, which has owned the land since 1902, will use lease payments to fund scholarships. This renovation not only preserves a historic landmark but also supports educational opportunities for future students. QUESTION: How might the renovation of historic buildings like the Chrysler Building influence the future of urban development and education funding?
