DOJ trying to indict former White House aide who testified on Jan. 6

Federal prosecutors are investigating whether former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson lied to Congress during her testimony about the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Hutchinson, who worked for White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified in 2022 that President Trump and Meadows were warned that some supporters were armed, but Trump allegedly dismissed the concerns and attempted to have security measures removed. She also recounted a story from Tony Ornato, a former deputy chief of staff, claiming Trump tried to grab the steering wheel when his Secret Service agent refused to drive him to the Capitol. This account was later disputed by Trump’s driver. The investigation, handled by the Civil Rights Division rather than the usual U.S. Attorney’s Office, was reportedly initiated by Republican House members. CBS News has sought comments from Hutchinson’s legal team, but the specific aspects of her testimony under scrutiny remain unclear. QUESTION: How might the outcome of this investigation impact public trust in government testimonies and the political process?
