Health officials report 74 new measles cases in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has reported 74 new measles cases since Monday, bringing the total to 1,078 cases this year. The state’s health department clarified that over 40 of these new cases were from individuals who were sick more than two weeks ago and are no longer contagious. So far, 207 people have been hospitalized, and five have died. The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine for effective prevention, but vaccination rates have declined, with only 92.4% of kindergartners vaccinated in the 2025-2026 school year, down from 95.2% before the pandemic. In response, Pennsylvania has administered over 8,800 MMR vaccine doses recently. This situation highlights the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to prevent outbreaks. QUESTION: How might declining vaccination rates impact public health and safety in the future?
