White House blocks Microsoft from foreign worker hiring programme

Microsoft and several other tech companies have been prohibited by the White House from hiring skilled international workers permanently through the H-1B visa program. Vice President JD Vance accused these firms of fraud, claiming they replace American workers with foreign ones. Microsoft, one of the accused, stated that most of their H-1B visas were for existing employees who receive equal pay to local staff. The US government will halt processing new or pending Permanent Labor Certification Program applications from these companies. Vance highlighted that Microsoft laid off 6,000 workers while filing 6,800 H-1B applications, suggesting they use foreign workers to undercut wages. Microsoft countered that 80% of their H-1B filings were for current employees, not new hires, and that international workers are paid comparably to US workers. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, was honored with a medal for technology innovation by President Trump. QUESTION: How might the restriction on hiring international workers through the H-1B visa program impact the technology industry and its innovation in the United States?
