Thieves steal 30,000 bottles of wine in Italy’s largest-ever heist

Thieves in Tuscany have executed Italy’s largest recorded wine theft, stealing around 30,000 bottles valued at $5.8 million from Marchesi Antinori’s winery near Cortona. The heist, involving at least seven individuals, saw the thieves disable security systems and use the winery’s forklifts to load two trucks with prestigious wines, including Solaia, Tignanello, and Guado al Tasso from the 2023 vintage. These wines, retailing between 150 and 500 euros per bottle, are highly sought after. The theft was discovered on Monday but announced on Friday to avoid disrupting the investigation. Authorities are examining surveillance footage to trace the stolen wine, which is challenging to move discreetly. The Antinori family, who have run the winery since 1385, are warning customers to be cautious of unofficial sales. This incident surpasses previous wine thefts in Italy, highlighting the ongoing threat to the country’s renowned wine industry. QUESTION: How might the theft of such valuable wines impact the reputation and operations of Italian wineries in the future?
