JD Vance casts doubt on firing squad execution and says he would not watch it

US Vice-President JD Vance has expressed skepticism about the Pentagon’s plan to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood attacker, scheduled for December. While President Donald Trump supports the idea, the Pentagon is still deciding. Hasan, a former US Army major, killed 13 soldiers and injured 32 others in 2009, and his execution would be the first military execution in over 60 years. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth suggested the livestream to show the consequences of such actions. However, the proposal has faced criticism from both political parties. Republican Senator John Curtis warned against turning executions into public spectacles, while Democratic Senator Chris Murphy called the idea “disgusting” and likened it to actions by the Islamic State group. The debate highlights concerns about justice, deterrence, and the potential impact of broadcasting executions. QUESTION: How might the decision to livestream an execution influence public perception of justice and its role in society?
