India’s “Cockroach Party” leaders released from detention

Leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party, an Indian youth movement, were released after being detained ahead of protests against changes to voter lists. The movement is calling for the resignation of the election chief. Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were freed on the condition of maintaining peace for a year, though it’s unclear how this affects their protest activities. Police detained them upon arrival in New Delhi, where they planned to lead a demonstration. A security crackdown in the capital led to over 2,000 detentions, including opposition lawmakers, with train services halted, metro stations closed, and mobile internet suspended. Most detainees were released by late Saturday. After his release, Dipke criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “an embarrassment to India.” QUESTION: How might the actions of youth movements like the Cockroach Janata Party influence political change in a country?
