Hackers heat up refrigerators at hundreds of supermarkets

Major French supermarket chains, including E. Leclerc, Intermarché, and Cooperative U, were hit by a cyberattack that caused their refrigeration systems to malfunction, leading to spoiled food and raising concerns about food security. The attack, described as “unprecedented” by Cooperative U’s CEO, affected at least 300 Intermarché and Netto stores, over 100 Cooperative U outlets, and several E. Leclerc locations. Hackers remotely triggered the defrosting of refrigeration systems, resulting in food losses and fires. Carrefour reported that 80 of its supermarkets were attacked, though most of its 6,000 stores were unaffected. The attack targeted refrigeration control systems from Danish manufacturer Danfoss, which were outdated and no longer received updates. Danfoss had previously advised supermarkets to update these systems. The incident highlights the vulnerability of food supply chains to cyber threats and the need for improved security measures. QUESTION: How might increased cyberattacks on essential services like food supply chains impact society, and what steps can be taken to prevent such incidents in the future?
