Russell Brand goes on trial to face rape and sexual assault charges

British comedian and actor Russell Brand appeared in a London court for the start of his trial on rape and sexual assault charges. The trial at Southwark Crown Court was adjourned after jury selection, with the prosecution set to present its case later in the week. Brand, 51, who is on bail, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges involving six women, with alleged offenses occurring between 1999 and 2009. The trial is expected to last up to 10 weeks. Known for his provocative comedy and past struggles with addiction, Brand gained fame in the early 2000s through television and film roles. Recently, he has shifted away from mainstream media, focusing on an online presence that includes wellness and conspiracy theory content. British law protects the identities of alleged sexual violence victims. QUESTION: How might the outcome of Russell Brand’s trial influence public perceptions of celebrities and accountability?
