Starbucks denies plan to buy Chipotle after report of possible takeover

Starbucks has dismissed rumors that it plans to acquire Chipotle Mexican Grill, a restaurant chain valued at $47 billion. A Starbucks spokesperson emphasized that the company is concentrating on its “Back to Starbucks” strategy to drive growth and is confident in its long-term potential. This statement comes after Chipotle’s stock surged by 8% following a report from the Financial Times suggesting Starbucks was considering a purchase. Industry analysts, however, doubted the likelihood of such a merger, with TD Cowen analysts labeling it a “low-probability outcome.” They believe Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol will focus on the company’s turnaround plan. Niccol, who previously led Chipotle, has seen Chipotle’s stock decline by about 50% since his departure in August 2024, with a 20% drop over the past year. Starbucks plans to share its fourth-quarter results and fiscal year 2027 guidance later this month. QUESTION: How might the spread of rumors about potential business acquisitions impact the stock market and investor decisions?
