Tom Cruise film Digger forecast to become one of Hollywood’s biggest flops

Tom Cruise’s latest film, “Digger,” is projected to lose around $245 million due to its poor box office performance. The satirical black comedy, featuring Cruise as oil magnate Digger Rockwell, saw a 60% drop in ticket sales during its second weekend, bringing its total earnings to approximately $35 million globally. With production and marketing costs estimated at $280 million, “Digger” could become one of Hollywood’s biggest flops, joining the ranks of films like “Cutthroat Island” and “John Carter.” Despite the setback, Cruise emphasized his focus on creating lasting films rather than immediate box office success. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the film received poor reviews, prompting Warner Bros to encourage audiences to form their own opinions. Meanwhile, “The Social Reckoning,” a sequel to “The Social Network,” also underperformed, earning $5.5 million in the US. The film, based on the true story of a Facebook whistleblower, was overshadowed by other releases. QUESTION: How might the financial failure of high-budget films like “Digger” influence future decisions in the film industry regarding project selection and budgeting?
