U.S. restrictions on Chinese drones are hurting cash-strapped police departments

A dramatic standoff in New Jersey ended safely thanks to a drone used by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office. A man, wanted for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend, barricaded himself with his new girlfriend in a house, firing at police. Instead of risking officers’ lives, Kevin Fennessy deployed a small drone to assess the situation. The drone revealed the man had taken his own life, allowing police to safely resolve the situation. This incident highlights the growing use of drones by law enforcement for various tasks, including tactical responses. However, most drones are made by DJI, a Chinese company, which has led to U.S. government efforts to support domestic drone production. Critics argue that American manufacturers can’t yet compete with China’s quality and pricing. QUESTION: How might the increased use of drones in law enforcement change the way police handle dangerous situations in the future?
