Bumble bought for $1.3bn in ‘bet on the future of humanity’

Shares in the dating app Bumble surged by nearly 50% after reports of advanced takeover talks valuing the company at $1 billion. Ithaca Holdings, a technology investment firm, is expected to announce a deal to acquire the Texas-based company soon. Despite the recent jump, Bumble’s market valuation remains significantly lower than its peak of over $14 billion in 2021. Founded in 2014 by Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble initially stood out by allowing only women to initiate conversations. However, the app recently removed this feature, sparking debate among users. The dating app industry has faced challenges as younger users grow disillusioned with online dating, leading to workforce cuts and declining investments. Match Group, owner of Tinder and other apps, has also seen a drop in share value. A 2025 report indicated that UK adults are spending less time on dating apps, with some opting for in-person activities to meet potential partners. QUESTION: How might the changing dynamics in the dating app industry influence the way people form relationships in the future?
