Grad student allegedly poisoned her colleague, tried to flee U.S.

A Chinese graduate student in microbiology at the University of Wyoming, Aili Wang, was arrested for allegedly poisoning a colleague’s tea with acrylamide, a chemical she reportedly purchased on eBay. The victim, identified as “K.T.,” began experiencing symptoms, prompting his wife and others to test the water from his coffee maker, which led to the discovery of the chemical. Surveillance footage allegedly captured Wang rummaging through K.T.’s desk and tampering with his belongings. Wang was apprehended at Los Angeles International Airport while attempting to return to China, carrying laptops and electronic storage devices. The incident has raised concerns about intellectual property theft, as both students were involved in research related to disease treatment. The supervising professor, Mark Gomelsky, expressed shock and uncertainty about the victim’s recovery. Wang remains in custody without bail, and she has not been assigned legal representation. QUESTION: How might incidents like this impact international collaboration in scientific research?
