Nature Index reveals the four countries to watch in biomedical engineering

Biomedical-engineering research has seen significant growth, with a 70% increase in published papers from 2021 to 2025, outpacing the overall growth of the Nature Index database. This field’s share of total articles rose from 2.4% to 2.7%. China emerged as a leading contributor, increasing its share from 28.9% to 50.9% of global output. The United States and Germany maintained their positions but showed little change in focus. South Korea, notable for its specialization in biomedical engineering, ranked fourth in contributions, with 4.8% of its research output in this field. Switzerland, Canada, and the Netherlands also showed distinct trends, with Switzerland leveraging private-sector research, Canada rising rapidly, and the Netherlands maintaining a strong international network. QUESTION: How might the increasing focus on biomedical engineering in countries like China and South Korea influence global healthcare advancements in the future?
