Brazil’s former spy chief who fled country arrested by ICE in U.S.

Alexandre Ramagem, Brazil’s former intelligence chief, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after fleeing Brazil to avoid a 16-year prison sentence for his involvement in a 2023 coup attempt supporting ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. Brazilian Senator Jorge Seif is advocating for Ramagem to receive political asylum in the U.S., claiming he faces persecution in Brazil. Ramagem, who lost his congressional seat following his conviction, reportedly entered the U.S. using a diplomatic passport. Brazil’s federal police confirmed the arrest of a fugitive matching Ramagem’s profile, though ICE has not commented. Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence related to the same conspiracy. The situation highlights ongoing political tensions in Brazil and raises questions about international asylum policies. QUESTION: How might granting political asylum to individuals involved in political crimes impact international relations between countries?
