MLB celebrates Jackie Robinson Day as every player wears No. 42 on anniversary of his historic debut

Major League Baseball will honor Jackie Robinson on Wednesday by having every player, coach, and umpire wear his iconic No. 42, commemorating the 79th anniversary of Robinson breaking the sport’s color barrier. Robinson made history when he debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, and went on to achieve numerous accolades, including Rookie of the Year, six-time All-Star, and 1949 National League MVP. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets will hold a joint ceremony at Dodger Stadium, where Robinson’s granddaughters and scholarship recipients from the Jackie Robinson Foundation will be present. This year, the percentage of Black players on opening day rosters has increased, marking a positive shift in diversity within the league. QUESTION: How might Jackie Robinson’s legacy continue to influence the future of diversity and inclusion in sports?
