AI-rendered Val Kilmer debuts in ‘As Deep as the Grave’ trailer

The filmmakers of “As Deep as the Grave” have used artificial intelligence to recreate the late actor Val Kilmer for a significant role in their indie film. The film, which debuted a trailer at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, features Kilmer’s character, Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist. Kilmer passed away last year at 65, and the decision to use AI to bring him back on screen has sparked debate. The filmmakers, Coerte and John Voorhees, worked closely with Kilmer’s family and the actors’ union to ensure ethical practices, emphasizing consent, compensation, and collaboration. Kilmer’s estate, including his daughter Mercedes, supported the project, providing archival footage for the digital recreation. The film, initially structured around Kilmer’s character, faced challenges during production but ultimately decided to include Father Fintan with the family’s blessing. QUESTION: How might the use of AI to recreate deceased actors change the future of filmmaking and the way we remember iconic performers?
