ChatGPT maker OpenAI shifts its focus to business users amid Anthropic pressure

OpenAI, known for its ChatGPT chatbot, is shifting its focus from consumer products to business-oriented solutions to boost profitability. The company plans to introduce a new AI model designed for professional tasks, aiming to attract corporate clients and compete with rivals like Anthropic. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has over 900 million weekly users, but most do not pay, leading to high operational costs. To address this, OpenAI is prioritizing business customers, who now account for 40% of its revenue, up from 20% when CFO Sarah Friar joined in 2024. This strategic shift has led to the discontinuation of some consumer projects, such as the AI video generator app Sora. OpenAI’s new model, codenamed Spud, promises enhanced reasoning and reliability, positioning it against Anthropic’s advanced Claude Mythos model. The company aims to increase business revenue to 50% by year-end, marking a significant change from its previous consumer-focused initiatives. QUESTION: How might the shift from consumer to business-focused AI products impact the future of technology in workplaces?
