Gun control group sues ATF over records release

A prominent gun control group, Brady, is suing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Justice Department for not releasing information about the largest sellers of guns used in crimes in the U.S. Brady wants access to documents known as Demand Letter 2s, which the ATF sends to gun dealers who have sold at least 25 guns recovered at crime scenes in a year. The ATF has refused, citing privacy and confidentiality concerns. Brady argues that this information is crucial for public safety and understanding how the government regulates the gun industry. The ATF paused the DL2 program last year after criticism from gun rights groups, who claimed it unfairly targeted retailers. The pause allows the ATF to assess the program’s effectiveness. QUESTION: How might increased transparency about gun sales impact public safety and the gun industry?
