Luigi Mangione’s legal team withdraws psychiatric defense

Luigi Mangione’s legal team has decided to withdraw a psychiatric defense in his New York state murder trial, just a day after announcing they would use it. Mangione is accused of shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in 2024. Initially, his defense argued that Mangione was experiencing an extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the incident, which could have reduced the murder charge to manslaughter and potentially led to a shorter sentence. Legal expert Richard Schoenstein explained that this defense would mean admitting to the killing but with mitigating circumstances, unlike an insanity defense that seeks complete absolution. Mangione’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 11, with the state trial set to begin in September. Additionally, jury selection for his federal interstate stalking trial is slated for October. CBS News New York will continue to provide updates on this developing story. QUESTION: How might the withdrawal of the psychiatric defense impact the outcome of Luigi Mangione’s trial?
