Trump awards Medal of Honor to 3 veterans of the Vietnam, Afghanistan wars

On June 18, 2026, President Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to two Vietnam War veterans and one Afghanistan War veteran in a ceremony at the White House. Retired Marine Corps Maj. James Capers Jr., now 88, was honored for his bravery during a reconnaissance patrol in Vietnam in 1967, where he led his team to safety despite being severely wounded. Marine Col. John W. Ripley, who passed away in 2008, was posthumously recognized for his heroic actions in 1972 during the Vietnam War’s Easter Offensive, where he single-handedly destroyed a bridge to halt a North Vietnamese assault. The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz. QUESTION: How might recognizing the bravery of past military heroes influence the values and aspirations of future generations?
