In 2013, anthropologists discovered over 20 ancient human relatives, known as Homo naledi, in South Africa’s Rising Star Cave. Initially, it was believed that these remains ended up in the cave by accident. However, recent analysis of dental enamel proteins revealed that all the individuals were female, suggesting intentional placement. The odds of all being female by chance are extremely low, indicating that these hominins might have deliberately laid their dead to rest in the cave. This discovery challenges previous assumptions and suggests complex social behaviors in Homo naledi.
QUESTION: Why do you think it was significant for Homo naledi to place only females in the cave, and what might this tell us about their society?
