New effort will get genome sequences for entire Endangered Species list

Colossal Biosciences, in partnership with the US government, is embarking on a significant conservation effort to help endangered species. They plan to sequence the genomes and preserve tissue samples of over 2,300 endangered plant and animal species in the US. This initiative aims to support future conservation efforts by creating a BioVault, a storage site for these biological materials. The US Fish and Wildlife Service will assist in collecting and sampling these species. This project is crucial because it could help manage genetic diversity, assist in reproduction, and potentially restore species that have gone extinct. This collaboration highlights a shift in focus towards preserving biodiversity and ensuring the survival of endangered species. QUESTION: How might preserving the genetic material of endangered species impact future conservation efforts and biodiversity?
